Screening for Major Vision Disorders for Seniors in the Community (Project Silver Screen)

Partner(s)

Ministry of Health, Healthcare clusters, Community partners

Project Silver Screen is a five-year national functional screening programme providing affordable three-in-one screening in the community for vision, hearing and oral health for Singaporeans aged 60 years and above. It also defrays the cost of functional aids - spectacles, hearing aids and dentures.

In the area of vision, about one-third of seniors who underwent the screening were found to require more comprehensive screening due to complex vision impairments such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. These seniors will be referred for advanced level screening and follow-up assessments by the healthcare clusters.

Seniors will go for the advanced level screening at mobile and pop-up eye clinics near their homes and those found to have major vision disorders will be referred directly to the hospital for treatment. Existing government subsidies apply for eligible Singaporeans.
